ART LEAGUE TO HOLD DRAWING - April 11, 2008
The Art League of Henderson County, Inc. announces a drawing for a painting by renowned watercolorist Tony Couch. The funds raised from this drawing are for the benefit of the Henderson County Public High School art departments.
The painting, of a rural roadside station, will be on display April 11th through April 26th at the Arts Council of Henderson County at 538 North Main Street, Hendersonville, during the Artists of Tomorrow exhibit of art by area secondary school students. Tickets are available at the Arts Council during the student exhibit, and at the Visitor Information Center, 201 South Main Street, Hendersonville, until the drawing takes place at the Art League’s booth at Art on Main on August 3rd at 2 PM. Tickets are $5.00 each, or 5 for $20.00. The winner need not be present to win (any shipping needed is at the winner’s expense). The Arts Council is open Tuesday through Friday 1 – 5 PM, and on Saturday 1 – 4 PM; the Visitor Information Center is open weekdays 9-5 and weekends 10-5.
Tony Couch studied art at the University of Tampa and Pratt Institute in New York. For years he was a freelance illustrator while studying watercolor painting with Edgar A. Whitney, AWS.
He has written three books on watercolor. His first, titled “Watercolor: You Can Do It!” was published by Northlight publishing in 1987. It went through five printings and became Northlight’s all time best selling book on painting. Northlight published a followup book on technique and then a third book, on design, titled “Tony Couch’s Keys To Successful Painting”.
Couch has been elected to membership in numerous national and regional art associations. He has won over 70 national awards and his work has been included in three annual exhibitions of the National Academy of Design.
May Guest Artist Receeption - May 4, 2008

The Art League of Henderson County will sponsor Bill Weldner of Hot Springs, NC as guest artist for May. Bill creates one-of-a-kind digital art printed individually on canvas with the theme "From the Carolina Coast to the Carolina Mountains." The opening reception will be on May 4 from 2-4 pm at Opportunity House, 2411 Asheville Hwy., Hendersonville. Mr. Weldner’s Paintings will be on display through May 29. Oil Painting Workshop - May 5, 2008
The Art League of Henderson County will present a three-day oil & acrylic workshop on May 5, 6, and 7, 2008, at the Church of Christ on Haywood Road. The instructor will be Sandra Pride of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Hendersonville, North Carolina. She has a part-year studio in Hendersonville.
Sandra will be teaching still life at this workshop and the class size is limited to a maximum of twenty students. Her painterly style is enhanced by her love of color and design, and the influence of her art teachers is evident.
Sandra has had a passion for art all her life, and has painted for twenty five years. She has studied with various professional teachers from Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico, New York, and Alabama - Sherry McGraw, David Laffel, Gregg Kruetz, Tom Browning, Ken Bacchus, Kevin McPherson, Robert Johnson, Marc Chattof, Al Sellar, Barbara Evans, plus instruction at the Art League of New York and at the Scottsdale Art School.

May Wednesday Meeting - May 21, 2008

The Art League of Henderson County will present local favorite Cynthia Moser as the program for May. The Art League meeting will be held Wednesday, May 21, at the First Congregational Church at Fifth Ave. and White Pine in Laurel Park. The meeting starts at 1:30, and guests are cordially invited.
Moser, a ten-year resident of Hendersonville, holds a degree in sociology from the University of West Virginia and has painted all of her adult life.
A popular teacher and prolific artist, Moser works by commission, only; although her works have been displayed at the Laurel Ridge Country Club for a number of years. Noted for both her landscapes and portraits, Moser will demonstrate a number of watercolor techniques during at the meeting.
June Guest Artist Reception - June 1, 2008

The Art League of Henderson County will sponsor Rita Peranio of Hendersonville as guest artist for the month of June. Her media is printmaking, including woodcuts, collagraphs and lithography. Her show is titled "Printmaking Perspective in Form and Structure." An opening reception will be held on June 1 from 2-4 pm at the Opportunity House, 2411 Asheville Highway in Hendersonville. Laurel Park Art Show - June 6, 2008
The merchants of the Laurel Park Shopping Center and The Art League of Henderson County are delighted to bring you the third annual outdoor art show and sale at the Laurel Park shopping center in Laurel Park on Friday and Saturday June 6th and 7th during business hours. The all-original works of approximately 30 artists, depicting various media, will be displayed for sale.
June Wednesday Meeting - June 18, 2008

The Art League of Henderson County is pleased to feature Veronika Hart as its program on June 18, 2008. Born in Tanganyika (now Tanzania), Hart grew up painting her exotic surroundings in the representational style of classical European masters before moving to Germany to finish her education. Meticulously capturing people, animals and landscape on canvas, Hart delivers figurative expressions of exotic proportions. She has just concluded (May 31) a successful solo exhibition at the YMI Cultural Center in Asheville.

ALHC 2008 Celebrity Workshop—John Budicin , Plein Air Master - September 15, 2008
Cost: $550
This workshop is scheduled for September 15th-20th- Monday through Saturday, with Wednesday cleared so John can be the program presenter for the Wed ALHC afternoon meeting. As part of his program, John critiques his students and talks about his work. He will do that on Wednesday as the program for the September meeting.
John is the outgoing President of the Plein Air Painters of America. John’s work appears often in the major art magazines, and his website features a number of his works. John teaches primarily by demonstration; so there will be at least three demos and five painting sessions. All of the painting will be done outdoors, weather permitting, with the sessions starting about 9:30 in the morning and ending around 4:30 in the afternoon. Attendance is strictly limited to fifteen in order to give John ample time with each student.
Although John is primarily an oil painter, his approach to design, color and value is applicable to pastel work. The cost of the workshop will be $550, with a $200 deposit, of which $150 is refundable up to 30 days prior to the workshop. This is a marvelous opportunity to paint with one of the country’s master plein air painters. Don’t hesitate on this one or space may be gone. Call Doug Jarvis at 828-696-3188.
