Fearless Sketching of Historic 7th Avenue in Hendersonville
Instructor: Miriam Hughes

Monday, April 18th  (rain date will be following Monday)
10 am -1 pm (bring a snack if you would like)
Meet at The Gallery on 7th Ave for a brief lecture and a few practice exercises. We will then walk down to the Train Station (1 block away)

Learn how to sketch outdoors in public without fear. Miriam will guide you  to learn to love playful sketching and to understand the critical difference between sketching and drawing.
In this workshop, we will start with several practices that will loosen you up, allow you to see and experience what you are sketching while giving your brain a rest.
Using a variety of materials, we will focus on the Historic Train Station and the surrounding buildings.
We will be working and experimenting with a variety of materials, but no erasers will be allowed.  All of the experimental materials will be supplied for your use.
You will need to bring a small lawn chair or stool, a water container and water and, most importantly, a sketchbook. I recommend  a 5.5” x 8” or 8.5” x 11” Strathmore Visual Journal MIXED MEDIA Sketchbook. The Mixed Media paper is important. Also bring whatever pencils, pens, and portable watercolors you have.
A materials fee of $10 will cover the use of other supplies and some special drawing implements. Pay to instructor at class time.
All levels of experience are welcome – come with an open mind and the craving for seeing the world in a new way.

COURSE FEE: Members: $75; Non-members $85. To register and pay, click here.

Miriam Hughes, a watercolor artist, feels the joy of sketching should be a daily practice for all of us, no matter what level of creativity we each consider ourselves to be. Learning to see and be in the world without overthinking our experience leads to delightful results as we grow as artists.

Pleein Air.
See the true color and value of the landscape as you paint in your preferred medium.

A two-session event introducing plein air painting to those with previous painting experience.
Instructor – Don Osterberg (dmosbo37@gmail.com)

Some experience with, and equipment for, painting in at least one medium (this is NOT a beginning painting workshop). This is an opportunity for a studio artist who has wanted to see what it is like to paint on-site (En Plein Air).
DAY ONE. Introduction to different techniques and equipment that can be used with different painting media to make outdoor painting comfortable and fun. Following a short break for lunch, learn the sketching techniques that will help you understand the importance of value in plein air painting. Each person will use these techniques to sketch one or more of the local views.
DAY TWO (Location to be determined). This day will be a different, unique experience as you adapt your painting process to the Plein Air approach. Throughout the workshop, you will have the support of the instructor and learn from everyone in the group. We will end the afternoon with a short get together for show and tell, critiques and comments.
